Ultimate K2 Base Camp Trek

Overview

Embark on an extraordinary 19-day adventure that takes you from the vibrant capital of Islamabad to the majestic landscapes of Skardu and the Karakoram Range, culminating in an awe-inspiring trek to K2 Base Camp and Concordia—the heart of the world’s highest peaks. This journey blends cultural immersion, exploring Islamabad’s historical landmarks and bustling bazaars, with the thrill of high-altitude trekking through glacial valleys, towering rock spires, and breathtaking mountain amphitheatres.

The K2 Base Camp trek is a journey through one of the most extraordinary glacial landscapes on Earth, following the Baltoro Glacier, the world’s fifth-longest non-polar glacier, stretching 63 kilometres through the Karakoram. At its terminus lies Concordia, a spectacular natural amphitheatre aptly dubbed the “Throne Room of the Mountain Gods. “From this singular vantage point, trekkers are rewarded with panoramic views of K2, the world’s second-highest peak, alongside a constellation of other 8,000-meter giants.

According to local legend, a night spent beneath the towering ramparts of Concordia adds a year to one’s life — a poetic reflection of the awe the place inspires. Here, the Baltoro Glacier meets the Godwin-Austen Glacier, forming the icy crossroads that leads to both K2 Base Camp and Broad Peak Base Camp, reachable via a single-day return trek from Concordia.

The expedition begins in Askole, the gateway to the Baltoro, and winds through a realm of staggering natural beauty: colossal granite spires, glacial lakes, and a host of 6,000- and 7,000-meter peaks. Along the way, trekkers pass near the Biafo Glacier, itself the world’s third-longest non-polar glacier, as they ascend into one of the planet’s most revered high-altitude landscapes.

Depending on your arrival time, we offer a selection of optional experiences to ease you into the journey ahead: perhaps a gentle walk through the serene Margalla Hills or a thoughtfully curated dinner reservation. These moments are designed to help you acclimatise in comfort and style.

Your introduction to Islamabad begins with a morning pick-up and a guided visit to the Lok Virsa Heritage Museum, where Pakistan’s vibrant folk traditions and crafts are beautifully showcased. Continue to the Pakistan Monument Museum, a striking tribute to the nation’s formation, before a midday stop at Laluna Concepts, an elegant studio where regional gemstones are transformed into contemporary art—with the option of a Q&A over coffee or lunch. In the afternoon, wander the charming lanes of Saidpur Village and admire the architectural splendour of the Faisal Mosque, then conclude the day at Daman-e-Koh, where sweeping views of the capital unfold at sunset.

Your journey continues with a spectacular morning flight from Islamabad to Skardu, soaring above the dramatic landscapes of northern Pakistan. Weather permitting, you may be treated to breathtaking aerial views of Nanga Parbat, the world’s ninth-highest peak—an unforgettable prelude to the adventure ahead.Upon arrival, the remainder of the day is yours to unwind and absorb the tranquil beauty of this Himalayan gateway town. Whether you choose to rest, explore the local surroundings, or simply take in the crisp mountain air, Skardu offers a serene welcome.

Today offers both leisure and light acclimatization. After breakfast, enjoy a guided walk to Kharpocho Fort, perched above the town with sweeping views of the Indus River and the Skardu Valley. Optional excursions include a visit to Sadpara Lake, followed by time to browse the colourful stalls of Skardu Bazaar, where you can shop for local handicrafts or last-minute trekking essentials.

Depart Skardu by 4×4 along a spectacular route that winds through the dramatic landscapes of the Shigar and Braldu Valleys, flanked by towering peaks and glacial rivers. This rugged journey—typically 6 to 8 hours—culminates in Askole, the last permanent settlement before the vast wilderness of the Karakoram. Depending on road conditions, your trek may begin before reaching Askole, adding an early taste of adventure to the day. This transition marks a powerful threshold: from the edge of civilization into the untamed grandeur of one of the world’s most awe-inspiring mountain ranges.

Distance: 20 km | Duration: 5–8 hours
Our first day on foot begins with the porters loading supplies for the journey ahead, setting the rhythm for the expedition. The trail leads toward Jhola Camp, tracing a rugged path past the snout of the formidable Biafo Glacier—one of the longest non-polar glaciers on Earth. After crossing the Korofon River, we reach the dramatic confluence of the Braldu and Domordo Rivers, where a suspension bridge carries us to the far bank. From here, the trail hugs the river’s edge, winding through stark, beautiful terrain as we gradually make our way to the camp at Jhola, nestled beneath the towering cliffs of the Karakoram.

Distance: 19.8 km | Duration: 6–7 hourToday’s trail traces the Braldu River, carving through a dramatic gorge framed by towering granite spires. On clear days, the legendary silhouettes of the Trango Towers and Cathedral Peak emerge on the horizon—a visual feast for photographers and mountain lovers alike. The terrain is hot and arid, with minimal shade, so sun protection is essential. Along the way, several meltwater streams intersect the path and may require crossings in river shoes. As we approach Paiju, the final treeline camp, the immense Baltoro Glacier comes into view—ushering us toward the icy heart of the Karakoram.

Today is reserved for rest and acclimatisation at the scenic Paiju Camp, nestled beneath the towering cliffs of the Karakoram. As porters prepare for the glacier days ahead—baking fresh bread and organizing supplies—participants are invited to unwind and adjust to the altitude. For those feeling energetic, a gentle walk toward the base of Paiju Peak offers striking views and serves as an excellent way to support acclimatisation. Whether you choose quiet reflection or light exploration, this pause in the journey allows body and mind to prepare for the adventure that lies ahead.

Distance: 14.7 km | Duration: 5–7 hours

Today marks the beginning of glacier trekking, as the trail leads onto the lower reaches of the mighty Baltoro Glacier. With each step, the landscape grows more spectacular—vast ice fields framed by jagged granite spires and shifting glacial terrain. The route involves navigating glacial moraines, with frequent ascents and descents over uneven ground. While relatively safe, careful footing is essential. In the distance, the dramatic silhouettes of the Trango Towers and Uli Biaho rise like sentinels over the valley.

After crossing to Liligo, the path continues along the rocky flanks of the glacier, eventually reaching the remote campsite at Khoburtse, nestled amid towering cliffs and ice-carved vistas..

Distance: 6.4 km | Duration: 4–6 hours

Though shorter in distance, today’s trek offers striking rewards. The route crosses two smaller glaciers en route to Urdukas, requiring steady footing and a spirit of adventure. As the journey unfolds, trekkers are treated to uninterrupted views of the Trango Towers, their sheer granite faces rising dramatically against the sky. Tonight’s camp is set near the military post at Urdukas, perched approximately 100 metres above the glacier. From this elevated vantage point, sweeping panoramic views stretch across the Baltoro, offering a breathtaking backdrop for rest and reflection..

Distance: 11.9 km | Duration: 6–8 hours

Today’s journey ventures deep into the heart of the Baltoro Glacier, following its medial moraine across a landscape sculpted by ice and time. The route demands steady movement over undulating, rocky terrain, with glittering ice towers and deep glacial fissures lining the path. To the south, the elegant summit of Masherbrum (7,821 m) dominates the skyline, its snow-clad peak rising like a sentinel above the valley. As we approach Goro II, the air grows noticeably crisper and the views more surreal—this campsite lies at the confluence of the Baltoro and Younghusband Glaciers, a dramatic threshold en route to Concordia.

Distance: 11.7 km  Time: 5–7 hours

One of the most spectacular days of the journey. The trail climbs steadily through moraine fields toward Concordia—a vast natural amphitheatre encircled by the world’s highest peaks. As the ascent unfolds, K2 reveals its towering presence, joined by the majestic silhouettes of Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I–IV, Mitre Peak, and Sia Kangri. At Concordia, the Karakoram’s legendary skyline stretches in every direction—a sublime panorama that stirs awe and reverence.

Distance: 11.7 km  Time: 5–7 hours

An early start leads across the rugged Godwin-Austen Glacier, weaving through crevasses and meltwater streams. After around three hours, Broad Peak Base Camp is reached, offering unrivalled views of K2 and its towering neighbours. The trail continues over moraine and patches of ice to K2 Base Camp—a place etched in mountaineering history. Here, guests may pause to reflect or visit the Gilkey Memorial, a moving tribute to climbers lost to the mountain. Return to Concordia.
