Combined Deosai Shila & Thalay Pass Trek

Overview

Embark on an unforgettable journey through Pakistan’s northern wilderness, traversing the Deosai Plateau, Shila Pass, and Thalay Pass.

This eleven-day journey is designed for adventurous travellers seeking a balance of exploration, natural beauty, and cultural depth — all without the intensity of a high-altitude technical expedition. Starting from exploring Islamabad’s historical landmarks and bustling bazaars to Skardu, the gateway to the Karakoram, the route takes you across the wildflower-covered plains of the Deosai Plateau, through traditional mountain villages, and over the Thalay La Pass — offering breathtaking views of K2, Broad Peak, and the Masherbrum range along the way.

With moderate trekking and a thoughtfully paced itinerary, this experience is ideal for those wanting to walk among towering Himalayan peaks, explore remote valleys, and spend their nights under starlit skies — all while enjoying the warmth of Baltistani hospitality. Unlike our more strenuous expeditions, this route focuses as much on the journey as the destination, perfect for travellers in search of both adventure and reflection.

TOUR ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrival in Islamabad

Upon arrival at Islamabad International Airport, you’ll be warmly greeted by a member of our team and escorted to the Hill View Hotel or a comparable boutique accommodation for your first night in Pakistan. Depending on your arrival time, we’ll be pleased to offer a selection of optional experiences—from a gentle walk in the nearby Margalla Hills to a curated dinner reservation—designed to help you acclimatise and ease into the journey ahead with comfort and style.

Your introduction to Islamabad begins with a morning pick-up and a guided visit to the Lok Virsa Heritage Museum, where Pakistan’s vibrant folk traditions and artisanal crafts are beautifully celebrated. Continue to the Pakistan Monument Museum, a striking tribute to the nation’s founding story, followed by a midday stop at Laluna Concepts—an elegant studio where regional gemstones are transformed into contemporary art. Enjoy an optional Q&A session with the designers over coffee or lunch. In the afternoon, wander through the charming lanes of Saidpur Village and admire the architectural splendour of the iconic Faisal Mosque. Conclude the day at Daman-e-Koh, where sweeping views of the capital unfold beneath the golden hues of sunset.

Welcome to Skardu—gateway to the mighty Karakoram and the historic confluence of the Indus River and ancient Silk Road trade routes. Upon landing at Skardu International Airport (2,230m), you’ll be warmly greeted by our local team and transferred to a carefully selected boutique hotel. Spend the remainder of the day unwinding in comfort, taking in panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, and preparing for the adventure ahead. This is an ideal time to acclimatize and conduct any final gear checks before your journey into the highlands begins.

Today begins with an exhilarating 4×4 jeep expedition to Deosai National Park—reverently known as the “Roof of the World.” This vast alpine plateau, perched at over 4,200 metres, unfolds in sweeping landscapes dotted with marmots, golden eagles, foxes, and a vibrant mosaic of wildflowers. Upon reaching the park’s edge, embark on a short yet scenic two-hour trek to our exclusive luxury wilderness camp at Mehdiabad Broq. Here, you’ll settle into spacious tents nestled among endless meadows and framed by distant snow-capped peaks—a serene retreat in the heart of nature.

Set off on a moderate yet rewarding 6–7 hour trek into the heart of Deosai’s highlands, where vast alpine landscapes unfold in every direction. Pause for a scenic lunch beside the Chahni Lakes—the highest freshwater lakes on the plateau—nestled in a pristine wilderness of wind-swept meadows and glacial streams. Weather permitting, the trail offers rare and breathtaking glimpses of K2, Broad Peak, and Nanga Parbat from the vantage point of Shila Pass. By late afternoon, arrive at the ShilaBroq campsite, where our fully supported expedition-style camp awaits with warm hospitality, hearty meals, and uninterrupted stargazing beneath crystal-clear skies.

After a restful night in the highlands, begin your descent through lush alpine meadows to reach Shila Village—a tranquil mountain settlement framed by dramatic granite ridges. Take time to explore the village and engage with local customs, offering a meaningful glimpse into Balti life and heritage. Later, continue by road to Yugo Village, where you’ll check into a charming riverside guesthouse. Here, the warmth of traditional architecture blends seamlessly with heartfelt Balti hospitality, creating a serene retreat to unwind and reflect.

Begin the day with a scenic drive to the foot of ThalayBroq—a secluded valley embraced by towering granite cliffs and whispering alpine forests. From here, a short hike leads you to our riverside campsite, nestled in a pristine meadow where the setting sun bathes the landscape in golden light. As evening descends, unwind with a warm drink by the campfire, surrounded by silence and stars in this untouched corner of Baltistan.

Today’s trail winds through lush green pastures and alongside babbling glacial streams, gradually ascending into more secluded alpine terrain. By afternoon, you’ll reach Dubla Khan—a tranquil glade cradled among dramatic ridgelines and vibrant wildflower meadows. Considered one of the trek’s most serene locations, this peaceful haven offers a deep sense of solitude and connection with nature. Your remote wilderness camp ensures both comfort and immersion, with the quiet beauty of the highlands all around.

Rise early for the most exhilarating day of the trek: the ascent of Thalay La Pass, a 4,572-meter summit that rewards with sweeping panoramic views across the majestic Masherbrum Range and toward the towering peak of Mango Gusor (6,288m). Pause at the summit to absorb the grandeur of the Karakoram, where the horizon stretches across glaciers and jagged ridgelines. Then descend into the serene summer pastures of Deserpa, a pristine alpine haven scented with wild thyme and threaded with glacier-fed streams. Grazing animals dot the landscape, adding to the tranquil charm of this unforgettable resting spot.

After breakfast, begin the final descent from Deserpa into the lush, fertile fields of Shigar Valley, where apricot orchards and traditional stone homes dot the valley floor in timeless harmony. From this tranquil landscape, you’ll be transferred back to Skardu, where a premium upscale hotel awaits—offering the comforts of hot showers, gourmet cuisine, and a well-earned night of rest after your highland adventure.

Weather permitting, take a spectacular morning flight from Skardu to Islamabad, soaring once more above the majestic Karakoram, Himalaya, and Hindu Kush ranges. As the peaks fade into the distance, depart with unforgettable memories of alpine wilderness, high-mountain passes, and the warm hospitality of Baltistan etched into your journey. Depending on your return flight schedule, accommodation in Islamabad will be arranged if required.
